Torah Portion Tazria: Leviticus 12:1 – 13:59
Tazria is Hebrew for “pregnant” (literally: “she is with seed”)
Summary of Tazria: A woman is ritually unclean
for 40 days after the birth of a son and 80 days after the birth of a daughter.
After these periods of time, she is to make a burnt offering with a lamb
and a sin offering with a bird. If
she can’t afford a lamb for the burnt offering, she can substitute a bird.
If a man has a skin lesion, he is to go to the priest who may diagnose it
as leprosy. There are various
diagnostic methods described, and the leper must be isolated.
But the goal is to return the man to society after the leprous affliction
is healed. Baldness is not a sign of
leprosy. There can also be leprosy
in garments and if so, the garments are burned.
